PHOTO: Should pets be made to wear seat-belts when travelling in cars?

A national pet store in the US has launched ‘Suffrapets’, an initiative that advocates equal rights for pets - based on the Suffragettes of the early 20th century who sought equal rights for women.
Pets Corner  asks if it should be a legal requirement for pets to be strapped into cars as all other passengers must be?
Research carried out by the RAC Foundation and the Companion Care Veterinary Surgeries*, suggested that four out of five injuries to pets travelling in cars could be avoided.
It is estimated that in a 30mph collision, an unrestrained dog can be thrown forward with the force equivalent to a small elephant.
It’s not just about injury to pet or owner though. A further survey* showed that almost 90% of motorists, regularly travelling with their pets, had been distracted by them when driving. 11% had almost crashed into the vehicle in front because of the distraction.
Dean Richmond, Managing Director for Pets Corner said: “Owners must be responsible for their pet when travelling and make sure that they are safe at all times. The passports for pets scheme, that is now firmly established, has encouraged more motorists to take their pets on longer journeys. Do we think about how our pets feel or their safety when we bundle our family into the car ahead of any journey?
“So, when you gather your family into the car, you ensure they fasten their seat-belts. If our pets are our family members too then let’s do the same for them.
Dis eyinbos will never cease to amaze me sha?
